Steven Hiroyuki Aoki was born on November 30, 1977, in Miami, Florida, parents Rocky Aoki and Chizuru Kobayashi. When Aoki was a little boy, his family relocated to Newport Beach, California. 

His father founded the Benihana restaurant chain and was a former Japanese wrestler. His three older siblings are his brother Kevin, sister Kana, and half-sister Devon Aoki.

Steve Aoki graduated from Newport Harbor High School in 1995. Aoki graduated with two BAs from the University of California, Santa Barbara, one in sociology and the other in feminist studies.
