The 7 Kingdoms are once more on the cusp of a succession war, the Targaryens—who look even cooler—have taken control of the Iron Throne, dragons are circling the city without the populace running away in terror.
Although the fact that House of the Dragon is a prequel to Game of Thrones is immediately apparent, it is not immediately evident how prequel the prequels are.
There are still many generations to go before Daenerys Targaryen, whose presence looms over the city that hasn't yet been destroyed. Princess Rhaenyra, who we first notice flying above the city on her dragon and who bears a remarkable likeness to Daenerys at the entrance to Kings Landing, is a distant ancestor of Daenerys.
In fact, it appears that the way the King's Landing shots are framed on the show is an intentional allusion to what would ultimately happen to the city. Because the last death is still decades away, the first episode is replete with tragic irony.
When precisely does House of the Dragon occur in the universe of Game of Thrones? This information relates to the series' timetable.

Westeros' history can be divided into two periods: Before Conquest (BC) and After Conquest (AC). Aegon I's landing in Westeros at time zero marked the start of the Targaryen Conquest. (In this way, the family gains control.)
The events of House of Dragon take place in AC, despite the fact that some characters will recall real BC events like the Doom of Valyria, a Pompeii-like calamity that nearly wiped off all the dragons.
That happened about 100 BC ago. (This helpful history of House Targaryen and its family tree may include House of the Dragon spoilers.)
The first episode of the series begins in 112 AC, during Viserys I's rule, after a first scene prelude in 101 AC. There have been roughly 200 years before the first episode of Game of Thrones, which starts in 298 AD.
However, it is most likely that the remaining series' events will take place between 129 and 131 AC. Rumor has it that the 2018 book Fire and Blood by George R.R. Martin, which details the history of House Targaryen, served as inspiration for the series.
The second half of Martin's book, which includes the "Dance of the Dragons" civil war battle, will be the subject of the television series. Princess Rhaenyra is involved in the war, which is a conflict over succession. This conflict started in 129 AC.

It's important to comprehend how George R.R. Martin uses dates in his book series A Song of Ice and Fire, which served as the inspiration for the HBO television series Game of Thrones. It's a fantasy series with a lot of depth and background. He uses the terms "Before Conquest" (BC) and "After Conquest" (AC).
When Daenerys' ancestor Aegon and his wives—who, in typical Game of Thrones fashion, were also his sisters—flew over the sea and employed dragons to conquer Westeros, the conquest in question occurred. The Seven Kingdoms of Westeros were united for the first time under a single monarch, marking the beginning of the After Conquest period and House Targaryen's 280-year reign.
The Targaryens were formally ousted from power when Robert Baratheon took the throne with the help of House Stark in the year 280 AC. The first season of Game of Thrones premiered in 298 AC, almost 18 years after Daenerys' birth. (The timeline in the books is a little different; the show aged up all the characters for obvious reasons.)
According to Martin's blog post from February 2022, House of the Dragon is set in the middle of the House Targaryen's reign, at roughly 103 AC.
We know this because he stated that his novellas The Princess and the Queen and The Rogue Prince, as well as additional details from his book Fire & Blood on the Targaryen family's history, served as the main inspirations for the television series.
In spite of "certain changes" from my works, he stated, "I'm still a co-creator of the programme, and showrunners Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik have kept the primary story the same."

House of the Dragon is a noteworthy tale. The new series, which takes place some 200 years before Game of Thrones, is about a terrible civil war that split the Targaryen house at the time of its apex of power.
We'll see how significant characters like Alicent Hightower and Rhaenyra Targaryen transform from friends in their childhood to resentful adults before the main fight even begins. The first season will include several time leaps, including one of ten years and others of fewer years, spread throughout it.
This is how you tell this story correctly, the show's creator Ryan Condal told The Hollywood Reporter. "We're narrating the tale of a generational conflict. Everything is set up such that you are aware of every player when the first sword strike is made.
The significance of this tale, though, pales in comparison to that from Game of Thrones. Although there are many players, just a small number of them are actively engaged.
Two factions, the Greens and the Blacks, who both count some members of the Targaryen family among their ranks, engage in a significant amount of combat. The Starks, Baratheons, Lannisters, and other houses from the previous season will make an appearance, though there won't be as much sprawl.
"I liked the idea of focusing on one family, and obviously the Targaryens had plenty of drama to go around," Condal said. The author continued, "I also appreciated the echo of how empires can collapse quickly; those are the types of talks we are having in our own country, which I don't think is anything I would have anticipated we'd be discussing twenty years ago.
Because it is a more intimate tale, House of the Dragon won't go as long as Game of Thrones did. I think the producers' ambitions for three or four seasons are about right; I don't see them extending this battle any further than that.
However, everything is possible. Condal asserts that HBO agrees with his idea to end the programme after a specific number of seasons. He said, "The easiest thing to do with television endings."
Based on George R.R. Martin's book Fire & Blood, which tells the story of the Targaryen dynasty from its beginning in Valyria to the Dance of the Dragons, House of the Dragon would carry the story to the death of Daenerys Targaryen's father, the Mad King Aerys.
The million-member House of the Dragon has the potential to tell other stories about this family once the Dance of the Dragons is ended. According to Sapochnik, the Targaryens are ambivalent. Therefore, this is a great starting point for other prospective storylines and spinoffs.
