Tami Roman was born in the New York town of Mount Vernon on April 17, 1970. Because she was reared in a home with only one parent, she spent a large amount of her early years by herself.

After her mother remarried, Tami was raised in a Muslim family that was quite devout. Her mother's marriage finally disintegrated.

Tami's career in the entertainment industry was launched after she appeared on The Real World: Los Angeles in 1993.
